  • Exhibition of Pingpo Miao Paintings held in the Guiyang Confucius Academy

    For hundreds of years, the Miao painters have been depicting the past and present of their ethnic group in a special style on their costumes, walls and papers in memory of their ancestors’ migration journey crossing the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. These paintings in the special style were referred to as “de fen de wo” by local people, which means patterns or paintings of Miao ethnic group. In 1995, Pingpo was named as the “Hometown of Farmer Painting Art of Miao Ethnic Group in Qiannan Prefecture”;

  • From Dyeing and Embroidery to Papers and then to Walls

    Similar to Chinese art, the aesthetics of Miao people is traced back to adornment, which embodies their pursuit of beauty, spiritual sustenance and faith conversion. As time goes by, the pursuit of beauty is gradually integrated into the lifestyle of Miao people. Therefore, even though they farm from dawn to dusk from day to day, they would exercise their skills of dyeing and embroidery whenever they can. It is hard for people to connect farmwife with artists, or imagine that such exquisite artworks are made with cracked and rough hands. This explains the most prominent difference between artists and indigenous ethnic Miao people and their peers. Miao artists, receiving no professional art education, rarely discuss about art and basically have no idea of the principles of art. However, they do know beauty and how to express it. The uniqueness of their art can be well reflected in their dyeing, embroidery, costumes, paper-cutting, and painting. These forms of art, originated from personal adornment, finally become a part of the outfit to be freely judged by people. Miao artists are proud of their craftsmanship.

It was also covered and reported by media. Back then, there were more than 80 Miao people painting, and Pingpo was renowned as the “Home of Farmer Painting Art”. Now as many years have passed, fewer and fewer people,only more than 20 people continued painting.
