On July 21, 2018, Qin Feng Chu Yun (Charm of Qin and Chu) -National Invitational Exhibition of Calligraphy on Bamboo Slip and Silk was opened at Confucius Academy. The current exhibition is an itinerant exhibition and the exhibition at Confucius Academy is the first one lasting till August 22. Then, there will be exhibitions held at Shandong Museum and Hunan Yuelu Academy successively.
Calligraphy on bamboo slip and silk refers to the calligraphy reflected in the characters written on bamboo slip and silk and the calligraphic style of ancient writing having been lost for over 2000 years, including the earliest rudiments of various calligraphic styles, serving as precious culture heritage of China and even the world. In the 20th century, the excavation of a great batch of calligraphy on bamboo slip and silk not only promotes the study of documents, Chinese etymology, and researches on other fields, but also brings about the brand new first-hand “authentic work” materials, enriching the understanding of contemporary people on the history of calligraphy and evolution of chirography, and introducing more new materials and new possibilities for the succession and innovation of calligraphy from the “source”.
The current exhibition is one of the series of cultural activities of Confucius Academy “Xi Shan Han Ji” (Writing Marks at Xishan), jointly sponsored by Shandong Museum, Yuelu Academy, and Confucius Academy Culture Communication Center. A total of 42 calligraphers from all over China exhibits 72 works of calligraphy on bamboo slip and silk, including both calligraphers with long-term engagement in creation and researches on calligraphy on bamboo slip and silk and calligraphers with profound attainments on other chirographies just starting to follow the calligraphy on bamboo slip and silk for creation. The contents of creation include the classics of the hundred schools of thoughts, Tang and Song poems; it may be said to exhibit the Chinese cultural essence of five thousand years by the exhibition of Qin Feng Chu Yun (Charm of Qin and Chu).
