On the morning of July 18, the First Exhibition of Bamboo Slip & Silk Penmanship by Teachers and Students of Advanced Class was held in Guiyang Confucius Academy. This exhibition displayed 100 pieces of Chinese calligraphy on bamboo slips and silk fabrics, which will last from July 18 to September 18, and will be exhibited in Yuelu Academy and Hunan Provincial Museum.

In July last year, the First Advanced Course on Research and Development of Chinese Calligraphy on Bamboo Slip & Silk Penmanship jointly organized by China Silk Calligraphy Art Research Center of Hunan University, Culture Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy and Hunan Provincial Museum opened in Guiyang Confucius Academy. The course yielded fruitful results and actively promoted the research and creation of Chinese calligraphy on bamboo slips and silk fabrics. This exhibition aims to show the fruitful results of the training course. The works developed by the first group of 36 trainees on the spot are a combination of the form, verve and modern aesthetic recreation of ancient Chinese characters.

“The first time I saw bamboo slips and silk fabrics, I felt that the mystery and sense of ritual of this calligraphy in its initial period were incomparable to modern calligraphy works, so I fell in love with it.” Cao You, a member of Guizhou Calligraphers Association and a trainee of the first training course, said that calligraphy is not only a writing technique, but also a form to inherit and promote culture.

“It is impossible to understand the spiritual essence of the research and creation of bamboo slips and silk fabrics if one merely imitates them.” Chen Songchang, professor and doctoral advisor of Yuelu Academy of Hunan University and director of the Bamboo Slips and Silk Literature Research Center of Hunan University, told reporters that the purpose of the training course was to promote the research and creation of the Chinese calligraphy on bamboo slips and silk fabrics, to improve the knowledge of the researchers and creators on Chinese calligraphy on the bamboo slips and silk penmanship, and to train a group of knowledgeable researchers and creators of the Chinese calligraphy on the bamboo slips and silk fabrics nationwide.

In addition, the Second Advanced Course on Research and Development of Chinese Calligraphy on bamboo slip & silk penmanship has started in Guiyang Confucius Academy. Forty students from all over the country will start a two-week research and creation on Chinese calligraphy on the bamboo slips and silk penmanship.
