Is Academy of Classical Learning Necessary Nowadays? Winter Debate of Confucius Academy Held

  On Jan 24, the "Winter Debate of Confucius Academy" jointly sponsored by International Confucian Association, Guangming Daily and the Cultural Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy was successfully held online. Zhu Hanmin (Dean and professor of Yuelu Academy of Hunan University and Chairman of Chinese Academy Association), Cheng Fangping (professor of School of Education, Renmin University of China and Vice Chairman of Chinese Academy Association) and Xu Yong (professor of Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University and Vice Chairman of Chinese Academy Association) were invited as distinguished guests. The Debate was hosted by Li Bing (professor of Yuelu Academy of Hunan University and Secretary General of Chinese Academy Association).

  The Debate themed on " Is academy of classical learning necessary nowadays?" to conduct free debate on hot topics such as the rise of academies, how to inherit and develop the academy culture, how to correctly guide the construction of contemporary academies and academy activities, etc.

  Academies has taken quite an essential seat in China’s history of education, academic and culture, crowned as the treasure in Chinese cultural history. From the middle of Tang Dynasty to its reform at the end of Qing Dynasty, the academy system has lasted as long as 1,000 years in China’s historical stage. There used to be as many as thousands of academies across China. During its long-term development, a set of unique school running forms, management systems and teaching methods have come into shape, boasting the important institution for talent training, academic research and dissemination, book collection and printing plate engraving in China since the Song Dynasty. Therefore, scholars, thinkers, educators and the whole society after the Song Dynasty attached great importance to it. On Aug 2 (lunar calendar) in the 27th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu, which was, Sept 14, 1901, the Qing court issued a decree to transform academies into schools, marking its end on the system level in Chinese history. However, the academies have not disappeared. In addition to some traditional ones that are still in operation, many new-fashion ones have emerged.
