On the occasion of the 111th International Women’s Day, Suo Xiaoxia, Director of the Cultural Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy, was invited to attend “the Light of Life: Pingpo Miao Paintings Exhibition” and “the Light that Reflects Life” Women’s Symposium hosted by Shanghai Museum of Glass and Seed Light Cultural Media.
Female Pingpo Miao painters, as a group, came afar from the mountain areas of Guizhou Province to the metropolitan city of Shanghai thanks to the “Four Activities” poverty alleviation and intelligence support program carried out by Guiyang Confucius Academy at Pingpo Village, Xima Town, Longli County in 2020, namely collecting 120 Pingpo Miao paintings, shooting a feature film, publishing an album, and holding a special exhibition of paintings. These activities attracted Huang Jingjie, the co-founder of the “Walk and Meet” activity and an expert of parent-child education as well as Lei Jia, an experienced media professional and curator, to lead their research team to Pingpo village.
Zhang Lin, Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass, is a team member devoted to public benefit activities. To allow more people to enjoy these paintings, all team members agreed to gather their collections and host an exhibition at Shanghai Museum of Glass to pay tribute to female Pingpo Miao painters. According to Zhang Lin, since its opening on February 7, 2021, “the Light of Life: Pingpo Miao Paintings Exhibition” has attracted more than 10,000 visitors. The stylish and bright exhibition hall of Shanghai Museum of Glass and the splendid and unique Pingpo Miao paintings complement each other. The Exhibition will last until March 28.
“The Light that Reflects Life” Women’s Symposium was held at the Rainbow Chapel of Shanghai Museum of Glass. Through discussions and talks, the hosts hope that the Symposium will “open another window to observe the world” for visitors and participants and carry out the dialogue between Miao culture and urban culture for stronger sparks of life to “light up” more people and their life. This is the significance of the Exhibition and the enlightenment to everyone on life brought by the female Pingpo Miao painters.
During the Symposium, Suo Xiaoxia, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Cultural Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy, made an opening keynote speech and briefly introduced Guiyang Confucius Academy. In 2020, the “Four Activities” program carried out by Guiyang Confucius Academy at Pingpo Village, Xima Town, Longli County, allowed Pingpo painters to benefit from their culture truly and become proud and confident. As a result, the unique painting style of Pingpo Miao ethnic group was better inherited and developed and attracted more people to appreciate and enjoy paintings of Miao ethnic group. She believed that the female Miao painters have their unique knowledge system of humans and nature. Only by approaching them can we truly understand the artistic conception in their paintings.
The first theme of the dialogue, “Value of Life and Art in Pingpo Miao Paintings”, explored the meaning of existence and life of female Pingpo painters from feminist consciousness. Ms. Huang Jingjie hosted the event with participating guests of Jiang Mei, Deputy Director of Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute, and Hu Junjun, a Buddhist Artist.
The second theme of the dialogue, “Let Art Reflect the Light of Life”, explored the protection of ethnic cultures in the contemporary context and the important role of museums and public welfare support in the publicity. Ms. Lei Jia hosted the event with participating guests of Zhang Lin, Director of Shanghai Museum of Glass and Dr. Luca Zordan, an Italian art historian and curator.
Finally, Suo Xiaoxia, on behalf of the Cultural Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy, expressed her thanks to Shanghai Museum of Glass and Seed Light Cultural Media for the carefully designed Exhibition and Symposium and donated a Pingpo Miao painting to each of them.
