Tan Dun: Guiyang Confucius Academy, A Marvelous Stage

On April 13, the “Night of Martial Arts” concert, by the world-renowned composer and conductor Tan Dun and his team, captivated a packed house at Yangming Auditorium of Guiyang Confucius Academy. This is the first time that Mr. Tan Dun has been at Guiyang Confucius Academy. When visiting Confucius Academy, he gasped with admiration at its beautiful surroundings and special architecture that inspired him to create music. He also expressed the hope that he would deliver lectures about films and music for three days and nights here.

During the lecture in the evening, Mr. Tan Dun set a high value on Guiyang Confucius Academy. He believes that it provides a great platform and the best access for the world to thought of Confucius. Through the marvelous stage, people from China and the rest of the world will come here for sharing. He also suggested musicians from all over the world make academic visits to Confucius Academy to study the doctrine of Confucius and compose music for Confucius. At the same time, he said that he would definitely invite musicians around the world to create music and hold an international concert about Confucius here.

The last stop of Mr. Tan Dun’s visit was the Exhibition of Pingpo Miao Paintings at the No.4 Building of International Institute for Chinese Culture. Mr. Tan Dun delightedly discovered that some images in Pingpo Miao Paintings seemed to illustrate musical symbols, just like Kandinsky’s music-depicting paintings, which can be heard. Through Kandinsky’s paintings and Pingpo Miao Paintings, he told us that art transcends time and space and knows no border. Music and paintings are essentially to restore what life is truly about. Energy transmitted by sound and images can touch the soul, making paintings sounded and music seen in colors. Mr. Tan Dun stopped for a long time to enjoy paintings about fishing festival, playing lusheng, a reed-pipe wind instrument, and harvest, and took pictures in front of some interesting paintings, as if he had heard melody, waltz and symphonies from these images.

On April 15, when preparing for another performance in Guiyang, Mr. Tan Dun raved again about the deep impression left by Confucius Academy on him. He said that Confucius Academy not only allows people from all over the world to understand Chinese and Guizhou culture but also enables people in Guizhou to accept cultural diversity and know that the great world is as fascinating as the great Guizhou.
