On October 18th, 2021 “First Writing Ceremony” of Guiyang Confucius Academy, an event of civilization practices, was held at Beijing Fangcaodi International School in Guiyang. After seven solemn and elegant rituals, more than 860 adorable children completed the first ceremony in their life and moved towards a new stage of life.
“First Writing Ceremony,” commonly known as “Enlightenment,” is one of the traditional Chinese cultural ceremonies advocated, planned, and executed by Guiyang Confucius Academy. It is a form of enlightenment education for children to learn to read and write and learn etiquette, which is of extraordinary significance for them.
The event started with the chorus Sparkling Red Star. In the strong atmosphere of Chinese culture, the high-spirited children dressed properly, and made a big bow three times to the statue of Confucius, the greatest sage, to express respect to the elders and teachers.
“Opening the heaven’s eyes” with red cinnabar represents the dawning of wisdom. The elders, teachers and parents dotted red cinnabar on the foreheads of the children, which means to open the wisdom source, with the best wish that they would be sharp-eyed, clear-headed and hard-working.
Demonstrated by calligrapher Yang Weiyong, the children wrote down the first big character in their lives - “人” (human), which means mutual support and help, diligence, and integrity.
In the session of playing the drum to show the attitude, the children chanted classic poems aloud and set the goal of their life, expressing their desire to study hard, make progress and accomplish goals.
As a representative of the elders, Professor Tao Yusu, former Level-2 Professor of the School of Philosophy of Guizhou University and Director of Guizhou University - Confucius Academy Institute of Traditional Chinese Culture, delivered his earnest teachings and sent his blessings to the children.
“Ceremony completed!” At the end of the ceremony, the guests presented pens to the children, wishing them to draw a new picture of life.
Zhou Zhijiang, Member of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Cultural Communication Center of Guiyang Confucius Academy, said that this year marked the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. In this special year, the First Writing Ceremony, as one of the four ceremonies of Confucius Academy (First Writing Ceremony, Coming-of-age Ceremony, Respecting the Elderly Ceremony and Wedding Ceremony), “went out” to the local school to enlighten children, aiming to allow children to experience the most extraordinary ceremony in campus, promote civilization practices in the new era, and enable excellent traditional culture and etiquette to serve the public better.
